For women of color, this segment is not an isolated case, because they have experienced the knowledge gap of the hairdresser at first hand. Many of them know that they cannot go from the street to a salon and expect a trained professional to know everything.    Show Source Texts

Thompson and her childhood friend Jennifer Lambert launched Swivel in 2016 to give African-American women the opportunity to find hairdressers equipped to meet their needs. The app lists recommended salons and stylists that have been vetted for their work with ethnic hair.    Show Source Texts

Swivel Beauty is a mobile app that organized stylists that specialize in African-American hair into an online network. The Swivel app not only helps women of color to find licensed stylists for their hair type and region, but also allows them to review stylist portfolios and reviews and book appointments through the app. Jihan Thompson and Jennifer Lambert launched the Swivels app to help women struggling to find the best hairdresser.    Show Source Texts

Co-founders Jihan Thompson and Jennifer Lambert developed Swivel as a beauty app to help speed the hairdressing process for black women. Not only does it explain every black hairstyle imaginable - weaving, braids, locomotives, blowouts and more - but it also gives users access to an online community where women of color can create a profile, share images of their hair spilled at the salon they love and share products they have used to give a certain look.    Show Source Texts

The app allows you to choose your hair style from images and it offers stylists who can comfortably replicate your style in your boudoir or living room to help you to do your hair at home. Tressenoire provides beauty services to women of color in New York City and Philadelphia. By launching an app for color-on-demand hairstyling, she wanted to make sure black women felt included.    Show Source Texts

The app allows users to discover and share beautiful new hairstyles, to get detailed hairstyle information and to connect with the hair and hair care community. The app's inspiration page contains thousands of styles that serve as shortcuts to the hair consultation process. Many women use the inspiration photos to make hair changes. The app features real women in the review section who sketch and rate customers' experiences with the stylist and final hair look.    Show Source Texts

Swivel Delete The battle of trying to find a stylist who knows how to work with the texture of your hair. By downloading a beauty app like Swivel, we black queens can discover the best hairdressers who know what works best for our hair types. You will be directed to a list of salons that meet your needs and understand how to approach black hair.    Show Source Texts

After a series of questions the app connects users to a curated group of stylists and salons in New York. When I met with Thompson earlier this month, she explained that Swivel plans to serve more cities in the future. With its sleek, easy-to-use interface, the beauty app shows you a complete list of local hairdressers you need to talk to, as if you had a rich Rolodex of hairdressers at hand. Marketed as a structured hair package (pink), the app also connects customers to a network of salons.    Show Source Texts

In a world where black women face prejudice and abuse in hair salons, it is more important than ever to find a salon and get respect for your hair. The black hair care segment was worth $77.4 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $876 million by 2019. Mainstream brands such as Pantene, Dove and Suave have recognised the power of beauty junkies and launched their own products specifically for women with naturally structured hair. In addition to the hair products themselves, a number of books and apps aim to revolutionize the beauty industry.    Show Source Texts

Join forces with Natural Chick Afrock as a go-to app to find the best stylist for your natural hairstyle. Swivel is about to bless your scalp with the gift of an experienced and talented hairdresser, who specializes in styling black woman's hair. I decided to test the app by visiting Hair Sadiku, a New York salon that specialises in curls and colours.    Show Source Texts

Black women often seek salon and hairdressing recommendations when they ask other black women. The dreaded struggle to find the right hairdresser who is familiar with her texture.    Show Source Texts

Ms. Thompson and longtime friend Jennifer Lambert introduced themselves to the app, which digitizes the hair styling process for black and Hispanic women, a group largely ignored in the beauty app craze. Co-founder Jennifer Lambert points out that other hair apps on the market are leaving a gaping hole for women of color.    Show Source Texts

A bi-racial woman, half-Jamaican and half-Jewish, she struggled to find a stylist who could embrace her ultra-curly, tangled hair without having to sit at a salon all day. Thompson, for example, was intrigued by the demands of beauty apps like Glamsquad and In-N-Out, where consumers can have their hair and makeup done as luxuries in their own homes. For these women, participating in the salon experience is all about the atmosphere, the cost to the stylist and the resulting stars who turn around their world.    Show Source Texts

Criticism raged online as news outlets, women's magazines and beauty bloggers questioned why stylists did not research and treat the style and texture of hair. We interviewed other women and at one point stopped a woman in the street to talk about her hair drama and the problems she had with her hair in the hair salon regarding her pain points.
